Partnering-with-Consumers Coordinator Lisa Copland strives to improve QEII Hospital’s multi-faith community.
Multi-faith staff and patients can anticipate better accessibility and usability of QEII Jubilee Hospital’s existing prayer room.
Inspired by feedback from consumers and staff, Partnering-with-Consumers Coordinator Lisa Copland applied for the QEII Jubilee Hospital Funds’ inaugural round for better accessibility and usability resources for the multi-faith space.
Funded by generous donors and supporters of the QEII Hospital Fund, the QEII Jubilee Hospital Fund Grants awarded one-off funding to selected staff-led projects that spark impactful changes for the community.
Ms Copland said that major public healthcare provider Metro South Health’s broader work around multicultural pastoral care and spiritual wellbeing also emphasised the importance of providing safe, inclusive spaces for people of all faiths and beliefs.
The upgrades include clearer wayfinding and signage, laminated guidance on shared use, increased storage solutions for faith items, and portable partitions where appropriate. These changes aim to be implemented by October, in-line with the National Clergy Appreciation Month.
The National Clergy Appreciation Month was established in 1992, where congregations uplift spiritual leaders, recognise the emotional and spiritual round-the-clock support they provide, and thank them for their service to the community.
Ms Copland highlights that the upgrades will provide a welcoming, inclusive and accessible space for consumers, faith leaders and staff and support their spiritual wellbeing and reflection and QEII Hospital.
“Access to a respectful, spiritual space supports staff wellbeing, stress management and cultural safety—particularly for staff who rely on prayer during shifts. A more inclusive room also improves the experience for staff supporting distressed patients and families,” Ms Copland said.
“This opportunity has encouraged our teams to look deeper with our consumers, multicultural stakeholders and faith leaders to improve our spiritual care space for the QEII community.”
